During the lockdown, South Africa’s internet access spiked as there were more people spending their time indoors and on the internet. We saw (Internet Service Providers) ISPs respond to this rise in demand by giving discounts, running offers, and improving the quality of their service.
An effect of this was that the overall internet speeds in the country increased by a good margin. Actually, according to Speedtest.net, South Africa has recorded an 18% increase in internet speeds over the past 3 months.
This increase in internet speeds has resulted in an increased national average of around 18.26Mbps, on fixed fiber alone, by the time of testing.
The table below highlights speeds of 10 ISPs that tested. The test was conducted on various devices, across multiple locations and the results curated to come up with an average speed for each ISP. The table ranks the ISPs from the highest speed to the lowest speed:
